Literacy Mile Fundraising

Our annual Literacy Mile Fundraising will take place on Saturday June 10, 2023
1-3pm
VCLA Community Hub at 118 Oakdene Ave., Kentville, NS

Come and join the fun!

The Literacy Mile is an opportunity to raise awareness of and support for the literacy needs of Annapolis Valley residents. There will be hot dogs and refreshments for sale, live music, an online auction, and activities for the whole family. During this event we will be celebrating the accomplishments of our learners and recognizing the community support, financial and in-kind, that we have received throughout the year.

Pledge sheets are available at our office at 49 Cornwallis Street for those who would like to collect pledges for us.

VCLA feels very fortunate to have reliable government partners who help to pay for such things as salaries, rent and professional development for staff and volunteers. However, each year we reach out to the community to help us raise up to $20,000 to meet needs that cannot be covered by grants. Funds raised through the Literacy Mile can be used to pay for daycare or transportation for learners so they can come to school, support a breakfast and lunch program so people do not have to try to learn on an empty stomach, as well as develop new programs as the needs present themselves at our door.

The Valley Community Association is a non-profit organization that is having a major impact on the lives and futures of many Valley residents. In the last year, well over 200 learners participated in our diverse programs. VCLA offers a range of free classes and 1-1 tutoring in such areas as the GED, basic literacy, English as an additional language, numeracy, health literacy, family literacy, computer literacy, trades-related upgrading, Indigenous teachings and youth programming. We also offer experiential learning opportunities in our community garden and commercial kitchen and support a food program for those who are food insecure in our community. Our mission statement is to help adults achieve their personal learning goals.
