The Literacy Mile is an opportunity to raise awareness of and support for the literacy needs of Annapolis Valley residents. Typically held the first Saturday in May, there are hot dogs and refreshments for sale, live music, a silent auction, and activities for the whole family. All proceeds raised go toward supporting local literacy and English as an additional language programming.
The 15th annual Literacy Mile promotional and fundraising event was held Saturday, May 4, 2019, at the Recreation Centre in Kentville. In spite of misty weather, we all had a good time together.
Thanks to everyone who contributed to make this a very successful day!
The Literacy Mile is also a time when we honour the achievements of our learners. Each year we present the William and Lucille Owen Award to two learners for outstanding achievement. In the photo below, Paul O'Brien says a few words after receiving the award in 2012.
The Owen Award winners for 2019 were Carrie Caldwell and Connie Benjamin Webster. Congratulations to them, and to all our hard-working adult learners!
