You are doing an amazing job integrating into the community, Andrea. It takes a lot of effort and courage to approach others and speak with them in a foreign language and you are doing it with a smile on your face.

One great website to find out what is happening in your area is valleyevents.ca. Many, many events are not listed, though, and it is always a good idea to read the local paper for more information. In Annapolis County, it is the Spectator (http://www.annapoliscountyspectator.ca/ for their online version) and in Kentville, New Minas, Wolfville it is the Kings County Register ( http://www.kingscountynews.ca/).

I wonder why it is that only U.S and German driver's licences can be exchanged for a Nova Scotia one, while everybody else has to pass the knowledge and road tests. It doesn't really seem fair to me...

I agree, Atsuko and Wen, health care could definitely be improved. I think part of the problem here in rural Nova Scotia, though, is not the fact that people are abusing the system, but that there just aren't enough doctors. I don't know why practising medicine in rural areas is not as attractive, but this is a global problem. What rural areas need is more family doctors, yet it looks like many physicians prefer to specialize or work in larger cities. And with fewer and fewer physicians, the workload for those that choose to remain becomes overwhelming.

Hi Wen, thank you for your comment!

My country, Japan, has a similar system to Taiwan: one can choose the doctor or specialist and go to any clinic or hospital. While care is free in Canada, according to the Japanese public health insurance system the patient must pay 20 or 30% of the service fee (as well as the monthly premiums), but this may prevent people from abusing the system with minor symptoms.

We lived in countries with different medical systems and we believe Canada’s is not the worst but can be improved a lot.

I am glad that you continue to find the time to attend ESL classes, Rose. You are so helpful for other newcomers because you know so much about the area and because you so willingly share that information with other immigrants.

It took us 1 year to find a family doctor, too. I never need one in Taiwan. We have so many doctors in Taiwan, you can walk in any hospital and wait for 30min~1 hour, then you can see the doctor.
My friend had to wait for 4 hours in emergency room in Canada. after long waiting, she still didn't get to see any doctor,so she just went home.
I hope this situation can be changed in the future.

Thanks Joan,

I hope Eon is okay with it. You know I love drawing, can't stop my hands for missing any chances to draw stuff. Besides he's cooking skill is a real kung-fu. I think everyone is agree with that.

Oh, what fun! Certainly, we have all been talking about your blog post in our class, Wen. Eon is our class hero, so to see him immortalized in your story and phenomenal illustrations is so exciting! Your English is soaring.
